APA Citation Generator

The APA citation generator searches the Crossref DOI registry, verifies the selected source, and formats its deposited metadata in APA 7. Manual metadata remains available but is clearly labeled unverified.

Find a real source by DOI, title, or pasted citation and create a registry-verified APA 7 reference and in-text citation. Use it as a planning or review aid, then choose a defined paid review when your prompt, rubric, formatting, or citations need deeper attention.

Use the tool

Find a verified source

Search a DOI, exact title, or pasted citation. Results come from Crossref's scholarly DOI registry; the tool never invents a match.

Optional verified lookup sends the entered DOI, title, or citation query to Academic Wizard and Crossref. The lookup query and result are temporarily cached in server memory with a 30-minute reuse window. Other tool fields and results stay in your browser unless you choose to email or save them.

Verified metadata or manual entry

Separate multiple authors with semicolons.

Optional. Use the page you actually cite—not the article's full page range.

Manual metadata can be formatted, but it is not presented as factually verified.

Optional verified lookup sends the entered DOI, title, or citation query to Academic Wizard and Crossref. The lookup query and result are temporarily cached in server memory with a 30-minute reuse window. Other tool fields and results stay in your browser unless you choose to email or save them.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

Which APA edition and outputs does this tool use?

The tool creates an APA 7 reference entry and an in-text citation for a journal article, book, or website. It does not convert citations to APA 6. If your assignment explicitly requires APA 6, follow the instructor's requirements and review the result with the APA 6 checklist.

Does this APA citation generator use real sources?

Yes when you select a verified search result. The tool resolves the DOI through Crossref and formats the metadata deposited for that record. A citation created from manually entered metadata is clearly labeled unverified.

What should I search for if my source has no DOI?

Search the exact source title or paste the existing citation, then compare the returned title, author, year, journal or publisher, and DOI with the source you used. If no matching Crossref record appears, enter only the metadata you can confirm manually; the resulting citation draft remains unverified.

Can the tool invent missing citation details?

No. A source title is required before a citation can be generated. Other unavailable details remain unknown: they may be omitted from the draft or represented by the APA no-date marker when the date is missing. Confirm every field against the original source.

What does registry-verified mean?

Registry-verified means the selected DOI resolves to a Crossref record and the displayed source identity and citation metadata came from that registry. It does not prove that the source is credible, peer reviewed, complete, suitable for your assignment, or used correctly in your paper. Check the source itself and your rubric.

How should I enter pages or a quote locator?

Use the Pages field for the source's full page range when applicable. Use the separate Specific page or locator field for the passage you actually quote or discuss. Registry metadata may supply an article's page range, but it cannot identify your quotation or paraphrase location, so verify that locator in the source.

Can Academic Wizard fix my full reference list?

Yes. The free generator formats one source at a time. Citation & Source Audit can clean up reference entries, reconcile them with in-text citations, and review style consistency across a full student-authored paper.

Does this tool store my sources?

A verified lookup sends the entered DOI, title, or citation query to Academic Wizard and Crossref. The lookup query and result are temporarily cached in server memory with a 30-minute reuse window. Manual citation fields stay in your browser unless you intentionally email or save the result.
