How to Remove a Blank Page in a Word Paper

Find what causes a blank page in Word, fix the responsible paragraph or break, and preserve your paper’s headings, page numbers, tables, and PDF layout.

By The Academic Wizard TeamOctober 9, 2026

A blank page after your references does not always mean you added an extra page break. Word may be pushing its required final paragraph onto another page, preserving a section start, or following a paragraph setting. Show the formatting marks before deleting anything; the right repair depends on what is creating the space.

Direct answer

To remove a blank page in a Word paper, save a working copy, turn on Show/Hide ¶, and identify the paragraph mark or break responsible. Delete an unwanted manual page break or extra empty paragraphs, but shrink Word’s required final paragraph rather than trying to delete it. If section settings or automatic pagination cause the page, adjust the relevant setting only after checking your assignment’s layout requirements, then inspect the exported PDF.

What should you check before deleting anything?

Save a separate working copy of the Word document. Keep the original available so you can compare headers, page numbering, and section layout after the repair. Work in Print Layout so you can see where the unwanted page sits.

The commands below use desktop Word for Windows. Word for Mac and Word for the web can place controls elsewhere or offer different options. If your version does not expose a named setting, open the file in the desktop app or consult the corresponding platform instructions rather than substituting an unrelated command.

On the Home tab, select Show/Hide ¶ in the Paragraph group to reveal empty paragraphs and breaks. The marks are editing aids, not text you need to remove from the paper.

Avoid Blind Break Deletion: repeatedly pressing Backspace or Delete until the page disappears without identifying what you removed. You can recognize this mistake when the page vanishes but a header changes, numbering shifts, or a chapter no longer starts where it should.

What does the Mark-and-Match Test tell you?

Run this diagnostic on the unwanted page and the end of the preceding page:

  • A final ¶ after a table or at the document’s end: Check whether Word’s required end paragraph has overflowed.
  • A “Page Break” label: Check whether the manual break serves a required new-page start.
  • A “Section Break” label: Read its type before making a change.
  • No removable break label: Inspect paragraph pagination settings and, if the blank appears only in preview or export, section-start behavior.
  • Extra empty ¶ marks: Determine whether they are accidental spacing or include the required final paragraph.

Do not select the whole blank page as though it were a separate object. Identify the mark or setting responsible, then make a targeted change. After each change, check the result before trying another.

Which blank-page problem matches your document?

Is the required final paragraph stranded after a table?

Symptom: Your paper ends with a table, and a blank page follows it. With formatting marks visible, the extra page contains a paragraph mark that will not stay deleted.

Cause: Word requires a final paragraph. Microsoft explains that this non-deletable paragraph can move onto a new blank page when it does not fit on the preceding page. A table that fills the available space can leave that paragraph stranded.

Fix: Following Microsoft’s “Delete a blank page” instructions, select only the final paragraph mark and set its font size to 1 pt using the font-size box on the Home tab. This makes the required paragraph small enough to fit on the preceding page when space permits.

Do not select the table, its contents, or the reference list along with that mark. The purpose is to reduce an otherwise empty structural paragraph—not to shrink readable content.

If the paragraph still occupies a separate page, inspect whether Page break before is enabled for it. Microsoft identifies that setting as another possible obstacle. The paragraph-pagination case below explains where to find it.

Check after the fix: Confirm that the final table remains readable and that no caption, note, or reference has disappeared. If the paragraph still will not fit, investigate the surrounding layout rather than casually reducing a mandated margin.

This repair does not remove Word’s final paragraph. It keeps that required paragraph from occupying an unwanted page.

Is an unwanted manual page break creating the page?

Symptom: Formatting marks reveal a Page Break label near the unwanted page. You may find the break after the final sentence or beside empty paragraphs.

Cause: A manual page break tells Word to move subsequent content to a new page. An unnecessary break at the document’s end, or breaks placed around empty paragraphs, can create unwanted space.

Fix: Select the unwanted Page Break marker and press Delete. Microsoft’s “Remove a page break in Word” guidance distinguishes these removable manual breaks from automatic page breaks.

Check the purpose of the break before removing it. A references section, appendix, or chapter may need to begin on a new page under your assignment instructions. In that situation, keep the necessary break and remove only the accidental spacing or redundant break responsible for the blank page.

Check after the fix: Inspect the heading that follows the deleted break. It should begin in the required position, not become attached to the preceding discussion simply because the page count is now shorter.

A successful repair removes an unwanted page without removing a required section start.

Is a section break reserving a blank page?

Symptom: The blank page appears before a chapter or appendix, and formatting marks show a section break. Alternatively, an apparently empty page appears in print preview or the exported PDF near a section boundary.

Cause: Section breaks do more than move text. They separate parts of a document that can use different layout settings, headers, footers, or page numbering.

A Next Page section break starts the following section on a new page. Odd Page and Even Page section starts can leave an intervening page blank so that the next section begins on the specified page type. Microsoft discusses these section-break causes in the blank-page guidance linked above.

Fix: First decide whether the section start is required. A thesis template may deliberately place chapters on right-hand pages. A report may need a separate landscape section for a wide table. Do not remove those boundaries merely to make the file shorter.

If the section does not need to start on a new page, you can consider changing its start type instead of deleting the section break. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for changing a section break. In desktop Word for Windows:

  • Click in the section after the break.
  • Open the Layout tab’s Page Setup dialog launcher.
  • On the dialog’s Layout tab, inspect Section start.
  • Choose Continuous only if the following section is allowed to continue on the same page.
  • Select OK, then inspect the layout.

If the section still needs a new-page start but does not require an odd or even page, New page may be the appropriate setting in that dialog. Confirm that choice against the template or department instructions.

Deleting a section break is not interchangeable with changing its start type. Microsoft warns that deleting section breaks can disrupt formatting.

Check after the fix: Compare the headers, footers, page-number format, numbering sequence, and page orientation on either side of the boundary. Inspect the chapter opening in print preview as well.

If you cannot tell which section settings must remain, Document Formatting is the relevant bounded layout service. Provide the Word file and the required template or instructions, and identify the affected section. The review should preserve required layout decisions rather than remove every blank page indiscriminately.

Is paragraph pagination pushing content forward?

Symptom: Text jumps to the next page, or an empty paragraph remains on a final page, but you cannot find an unwanted manual Page Break marker. Deleting nearby text does not resolve the underlying behavior.

Cause: Word creates automatic page breaks as content flows. Paragraph settings can also control where text starts and what stays together.

Microsoft’s page-break guidance linked above states that automatic page breaks cannot be deleted like manual breaks. Instead, you can adjust the paragraph settings that influence pagination:

  • Page break before starts the selected paragraph on a new page.
  • Keep with next keeps a paragraph with the paragraph that follows it.
  • Keep lines together prevents a paragraph from splitting across pages.
  • Widow/Orphan control helps prevent isolated lines at page boundaries.

Fix: Select the affected paragraph—or the paragraph immediately after the unexpected gap—and open Layout → Paragraph dialog launcher → Line and Page Breaks. Inspect the settings before changing them.

Clear Page break before if it is unintentionally forcing an empty final paragraph or an ordinary body paragraph onto a new page. Check whether Keep with next has accidentally been applied across body paragraphs, creating a chain that Word tries to keep together.

Do not clear every pagination option throughout the paper. A heading may need Keep with next so that it does not sit at the bottom of a page without its supporting text. A chapter heading may intentionally use Page break before.

Check after the fix: Look for stranded headings, awkward paragraph splits, and new gaps nearby. A setting change should solve the unwanted pagination without weakening the layout elsewhere.

What should you cut instead of adding more spacing?

Cut layout workarounds that depend on empty paragraphs. They make the page position depend on how much text appears earlier in the document rather than on the intended section structure.

Weak layout — cut this
(sample text for demonstration only)

Empty paragraphs added after the discussion to push the References heading onto a fresh page.

Stronger layout — replace it with this
(sample text for demonstration only)

A References heading with Page break before enabled, when the assignment requires the reference list to start on a new page.

The replacement ties the new-page start to the heading. It does not rely on a stack of empty paragraphs that can move as you revise the discussion.

Apply the same principle when repairing the document’s end: remove accidental empty paragraphs, but do not try to erase the required final paragraph. Blind Break Deletion treats every invisible mark as disposable. A controlled repair distinguishes spacing clutter from document structure.

Avoid replacing a blank-page problem with a compliance problem. Smaller margins, shrunken body text, or removed chapter breaks are not acceptable shortcuts when the assignment specifies those features.

Common questions

Why does the blank page keep returning?

The setting that creates it may still be present. For example, you may have removed empty paragraphs while leaving Page break before enabled, or reduced spacing without changing an unnecessary odd-page section start.

Run the Mark-and-Match Test again. Diagnose the recurring cause instead of repeating the same deletion.

Can I delete an automatic page break?

No. Microsoft distinguishes automatic pagination from removable manual breaks. Adjust the relevant paragraph pagination settings or the content layout instead.

Do not reduce required margins or font sizes merely to force more content onto the preceding page.

Should I remove a blank page before a thesis chapter?

Only if the page is unintended. Check the department’s template and chapter-start requirements first. An odd-page section start may be serving a deliberate right-hand opening convention.

When the requirement is unclear, ask the department or instructor before changing the section start.

Can I just delete the blank page from the PDF?

That does not repair the Word source. The blank page can return the next time you export, and deleting a PDF page can leave the document’s visible numbering or contents references out of step with the file.

Repair the Word document, then create a fresh PDF from the corrected version.

What if I use Word for Mac or Word for the web?

Use the same diagnosis: inspect paragraph marks, manual breaks, section starts, and pagination settings. Do not assume the Windows dialog paths in this guide match your interface.

Microsoft’s linked support pages provide platform-specific instructions where available. If your web version does not provide the section or paragraph controls you need, use desktop Word for that repair.

Before You Submit

Retest the repaired document as a whole, not just the page that disappeared. Hide the formatting marks for a clean visual inspection, then compare the working copy with the original.

Check the following:

  • Page numbering: Confirm the required numbering format and sequence across front matter, body sections, and appendices.
  • Headers and footers: Make sure the repair has not changed section-specific content.
  • Headings: Check that chapter and section openings still begin where required and remain attached to their following text.
  • References: Confirm that the list is complete and that its heading, entries, and spacing remain intact.
  • Tables and captions: Check that nothing was selected, shrunk, or removed along with an empty paragraph.
  • Contents and cross-references: If pagination changed, update any automatic contents or page-reference fields, then check their displayed results.

Export a fresh PDF from the repaired Word file. Open it and inspect the document’s end, the repaired area, and the section boundaries. Do not assume that a correct editing view guarantees a correct export.

If the reference list also has independent problems with citation style or reference-entry formatting, Citation Formatting addresses that separate need. A blank page alone is a document-layout problem, not evidence that the citations need rewriting.

Need help preserving the layout while removing the page?

Choose Document Formatting for help with the Word layout, and start an order with the editable file, assignment requirements, and a description of where the blank page appears. Include any template rules governing chapter starts, margins, or numbering.

The right result is not simply a shorter file. It is a corrected Word document whose required layout survives the repair and the PDF export.
