Thesis editing should improve a student-authored draft without replacing the student's research, analysis, or voice. The most useful review starts with the argument and chapter structure, then moves through evidence, citations, sentences, formatting, and final proofreading. Start with the thesis thread test
Run this diagnostic before editing individual sentences.
- Write the research question at the top of a blank page.
- Copy the central claim or purpose statement below it.
- Write one sentence describing the job of each chapter.
- Add the strongest evidence or result that supports each chapter's job.
- Copy the conclusion's main answer at the bottom.

Literature review
The literature review should synthesize sources around themes, methods, debates, or gaps. It should not become a sequence of disconnected article summaries. Each section should help establish the research problem or explain the framework used later.

Results or findings
Verify that labels, tables, figures, and narrative descriptions use the same terms and values. Separate observation from interpretation when the field or required format expects that distinction. Any numerical or factual correction must be confirmed against the student's data or verified source.
Discussion
The discussion should explain what the findings mean, how they relate to the research question, where they agree or disagree with prior work, and what their limits are. Watch for claims that become broader than the method or evidence permits.
Conclusion
Check that the conclusion answers the stated question without adding new evidence or promising more certainty than the project supports. Recommendations and future-research ideas should follow from the actual findings, not from a generic ending.
Improve paragraphs without taking over authorship
Editing should make the student's reasoning easier to see. It should not add a new theory, source, result, or interpretation.

The sentence is vague. It does not identify a result, define success, or state a defensible relationship.

The revision names the basis of the claim and keeps the limitation visible. It is appropriate only when the draft has already defined the criteria and sample. If that information is missing, the editor should leave a comment asking the student to clarify rather than inventing the answer.

Run a consistency pass
Long documents collect small mismatches. Build a consistency sheet before the final edit and record the choices that must remain stable.
Check:
- abbreviations and their first definitions;

- tense choices for prior research, completed methods, and present claims;
- heading levels and chapter naming;
